CUSCO, PUNO 10D/9N

On this fantastic excursion, you will visit the following places: Lima (The City of the Kings), Cusco (City and Capital of the Inca Empire), visiting the main tourist attractions of our ancestors: The city tour, sacred valley of the Incas, the salt mines of Maras and Moray with their experimental agricultural fields and passing along the traditional Inca trail with its extensive biodiversity, culminating in an incredible view at Machu Picchu (one of the New 7 Wonders of the World). Traveling by bus through the different places and attractions of our region, passes and beautiful mountains, and seeing some cameloids of the region end in the lakeside city of Puno (Folklore Capital), Lake Titicaca, and mystical floating islands: Uros, Amantani and Taquile.

Itinerary

Day 01 – CUSCO / CITY TOUR

After picking you up, we will begin with our city tour, in which we start for the Temple of Qoricancha, also known as the Inti Cancha (House of the Sun), which was an important shrine dedicated to the Sun God. Then we will pass by the Plaza de Armas and the Cathedral. Later, we will make our way by bus to Sacsayhuaman where different deities were worshipped within its huge stone walls, some measuring more than 9m/30ft. tall can be seen. This is also the site where the most important festival of Inca times, the Inti Raymi Festival is held. Continuing the tour, we arrive at Qenqo where were some types of religious sacrifices were performed, and was also dedicated to astronomy, and where will appreciate an amphitheater. Then we will get to know Puca Pucara, considered as a military point and control for people who made their entrance to the imperial city. Finally, we arrive at Tambomachay, is also known as the (baths of the Inca), but it was a place of agriculture, as well as very important site where ceremonies for the cult of the water were performed. After visiting this we return to the city of Cusco.

Day 2 – CUSCO / SACRED VALLEY OF THE INCAS / CUSCO

You will be picked up from your accommodation around 8:30 / 9:00 am. After collecting all passengers, will we go on bus to the village of Pisaq, which is approximately 45 min. from the city. Then we will pass through the viewpoint of Taray, where you can appreciate the majestic Sacred Valley as well as the landscape, snowcapped mountains, and the Urubamba river. Continuing, we arrive at this typical town of Pisaq and appreciate its traditional market, which is very famous for keeping their customs and traditions. Then we will go to the archaeological area where we will see its impressive agricultural terraces as well as some major venues. After the visit we drive to Urubamba where we will have lunch, but along the way we will observe some of the typical villages of the area, as well as its beautiful scenery After lunch we will drive to Ollantaytambo where the largest building dedicated to the worship of the Sun is built, as well as some ceremonial fountains as well as appreciate the construction and how this place maintains its typical streets.
On the way back to the city of Cusco, we will visit the traditional picturesque village of Chinchero, where its colonial style traditional temple is built on Inca foundations and their impeccable terraces. Here you will find the remains of the actual home of Túpac Yupanqui, which was an agricultural center. One of its biggest attractions is the traditional market originally dedicated to barter, that can be seen between the residents of the region. Then we will return to the city of Cusco, arriving at approximately 7:00 pm.

DAY 03 – MARAS – MORAY – SALINERAS

After breakfast at the hotel, we will pick you up between 8:30 am to 9:00 am in our van, then go to the town of Maras. On the way we will take in some typical and beautiful landscapes and towns. When you visit this village, you can see the Vilcanota mountain range as well as its imposing glaciers as they are: the “Chicon” and “La Verónica.” The local people keep some attractions of the Colonial and Republican, which in colonial times was the main crossing point for the jungle of Cusco as well as to enter the city. Continuing the tour, we will reach the archaeological site of Moray located 7 km. from the town. Because of its climatic characteristics, this place was considered as a center of agricultural experimentation, (greenhouse), obtaining high quality nutritious products. Finally, we will visit the salt mines which are approximately 2000 wells of salt which were exploited from the Inca and colonial times. Today the people maintain it as well as use it for marketing. Return to the city of Cusco.

4th.- DAY: CUSCO – PISKACUCHO KM 82 – WAYLLABAMBA.-

On this day our excursion begins with being picked up from your hotel very early, then go by bus to kilometer 82. We pass through some villages typical of the region, as well as see some mountains which are part of the Andes Cordillera. Along the way, we will make a little stop in Ollantaytambo (30 min) in order to purchase drinks, snacks, canes, rain ponchos, flashlights etc. You will also have the opportunity to have the optional breakfast (not included), then continue by bus to reach our starting place in PISKACUCHO or Km 82. Then we will go to the control desk, and here you will show your original documents (ID card, passport, and persons who are students the ISIC card (originals)).
This day is a very easy since most of the road is flat and there are not many ups and downs. We will hike to the banks of the Urubamba river and observe some snowy and landscapes in the distance before reaching the archaeological site of Patallacta, located in the valleys of (Kusichaca and the Sacred Valley). Then we will continue up to our lunch spot at TARACHAYOC. After a short break, we will continue until our first camp at Wayllabamba, where we spend the night.

  • Minimum Altitude: 2,680 m / 8,790 feet.
  • Distance traveled: 12 km / 7.5 miles approximately.
  • Approximate walking time: 6 -7 hours.
  • Difficulty level: Moderate
  • Available: Cold shower at the campsite.

5th.- DAY: WAYLLABAMBA – PASO DE LA MUJER MUERTA – PACAYMAYU.

We will have breakfast at approximately 6:00am then we will begin our hike. This is the hardest and most difficult day, but not impossible, where we will ascend to the highest point on the Inca trail called the Warmi Wañusca (Dead Woman) pass, located at 4,200 meters above sea level. Here we will have different microclimates where you can purchase some drinks in different places such as: Ayapata and Llullucha Pampa. There are no places to purchase from this point forward. Then we reach the Summit, where you can see the majestic valleys that surround us and take some photos full of emotion. Then we will start to go down to our camp in Pacaymayo where we will have lunch, and the afternoon will be free for a siesta (nap) for refuel for the next. Later in the afternoon we have happy hour, then dinner and rest here for the night, where the temperature drops a lot.

  • Minimum Altitude: 3,000 m / 9,842 feet.
  • Distance traveled: 11 km / 6 miles approximately.
  • Approximate walking time: 7- 8 hours.
  • Difficulty level: Hard.
  • Available: Cold shower at the campsite.

6th.- DAY: PACAYMAYU – PASO DE RUNCURACAY – WIÑAYHUAYNA

We will get up early for our breakfast this day also. After breakfast, we will provide you with canteens or 1lt. bottles (cold boiled water) per person. This is the longest day of the Inca trail, but also the cultural, landscape and part of jungle (rainforests) day. We will visit the archaeological sites of Runcuracay, Sayacmarca and Puyupatamarca, the 2nd highest point at 3,950 m / 12.959 feet. Before the halfway point, we will visit the archaeological site of Runcuracay where we will have a guided tour and then we will continue the second highest point. Rest and descending about 40 min. we will visit the archaeological site of Sayacmarca. Then we continue on foot 30 min to where we will have lunch. We will have a short rest and then move on to the last place we’ll visit of Puyupatamarca. En route we can observe some landscapes as well as the immense forests, orchids and some animals. Once we arrive at our third archeological site, we will descend down some stairs until we arrive at our last camp, where we will spend the last night at a place called Wiñayhuayna (forever young).

7th Day – WIÑAYHUAYNA- MACHUPICCHU – CUSCO

Here we will have our breakfast very early. Then we will make our way to the next control post and we will begin our hike very early for two hours to arrive at the citadel of Machu Picchu, where we will appreciate the sunrise, but first we will pass through the Inti Punk (doorway of the Sun). Here you will be able to take traditional photos. After appreciating this magnificent panorama, we will have a guided tour of the sanctuary for about 2 hours of the most important places and surroundings of the citadel, such as: the religious sector, agricultural zone, ceremonial fountains, etc.
After the tour, you will have free time to explore the citadel and visit several other sites and places of the citadel to take photos. Afterwards, we will descend to the town of Aguas Calientes to have lunch and make our way to the train station 30 minutes before departure. Depending on the different hours of the train, the train leaves from Aguas Calientes to Ollantaytambo where we will be picked up by return bus, which is included, to the city of Cusco.

Note:
Times depend a lot on the train schedule you are given. You have to arrive at least half an hour before your train’s departure at the station. Rates are subject to any increase or readjustment as determined by the Ministry of Culture and PERU RAIL S. A (railway company).

DAY 08 – ROUTE OF THE SUN CUSCO / PUNO

You will be picked up from your hotel at 6:20am, then leave with Wonders or Turismo Mer with an official tour guide and service on board, for the city of Puno. Along the journey, we will visit the town of Andahuaylillas, where you will find the “Sistine Chapel of America.” This church is one of the most amazing and beautiful Andean folk religious art examples, and is a jewel of the racially mixed Baroque architecture, RAQCHI. The temple of the God Viracochoa, 121 km from the city of Cusco, is an Inca Temple of monumental dimensions with 11 giant columns, whose bases are built with perfectly carved stones. In addition, there are Qolcas, or barns, enclosures of military order, religious walls, Baths of the Inca and others. SICUANI. We stop to enjoy a buffet lunch and then we will continue, to LA RAYA. Midpoint between Cusco-Puno. This is the highest point of the trip, at 4,335m. From here, we can see beautiful snow-capped, scenery, llamas and vicuñas. PUCARA. It is the oldest and most important Ceremonial center of the Highlands, former Center to the Tiahuanaco, characterized by a series of stepped platforms resembling a pyramid called Calasaya. It is possible to also appreciate interesting lito – sculpture, stelae, or tablets of characters. Here is where you will discover the origins of the Andean culture of the Highlands. 17.00 HRS arrival at Puno 3810m. Transportation to your hotel. Overnight

DAY 09. – PUNO / LAKE TITICACA 01 DIA

Breakfast 6:30am. Pickup from hotel at 7:00am. We start on a comfortable boat by the Lake to the floating islands of the Uros, where we will observe the biodiversity in the area. There will be a demonstration of daily life, and we will observe the construction of small rafts of reeds skillfully interwoven, then continue the exciting journey to the island of Taquile. This is the starting point at which the hike begins along a very scenic and comfortable route overlooking the Bolivian side, passing by various communities and visiting several families along the route; some of the families organized and will present a demonstration of dances, music and textiles (dyeing with plants and their experiential modes show) through which passengers will enjoy and share the true habits of the native people of Taquile. After the visit, we will go to taste the delicious MENU TURISTICO with a spectacular view of Lake Titicaca, then head toward the small plaza, where we can appreciate the beautiful and rustic church, followed by a hike to where we embark to return to Puno at 5:30pm.

In order to enter these archeological sites, it is necessary for you to purchase or acquire the BOLETO TURISTICO with which you can obtain at our first visiting site at a cost of S/. 130.00 soles,and is valid for: (10 days to visit the 16 tourist attractions) and with a student card (ISIC) it is S/. 70.00 soles. It is important that this same ticket is used for your visit to the sacred valley and other attractions, but if you prefer, you can visit just one place by purchasing a partial ticket which is S/.70.00 soles and is valid for one day.

IMPORTANT FOR MAKING RESERVATIONS

To make the different reservations, as well as the route of the Inca trail Machupicchu 04d/03n, you must provide the following information: full name, nationality, date of birth, passport. Students must send their scanned ISIC card (valid), children up to 07 years scanned Passport. If at some point you receive a new passport, send scanned copies, and for the hike and entrance, it is necessary to bring both the old and new passports for the hike on the Inca Trail.

RECOMMENDATIONS OF WHAT TO BRING ON THE INCA TRAIL HIKE

Passengers should carry the following personal items:
Travel insurance, personal items, first aid kit, fever/ upset stomach/altitude sickness pills, water purifier, sunscreen, mosquito repellent, rain ponchos, canes, hiking boots, camera, cap for the sun and the cold, thermal clothes for in the night and light clothing for the day, money (at personal discretion) and original documents: Passport, DNI, and for students, their original ISIC card.
